Name: Swaranjit Kaur
Age: 84
Swaranjit Kaur may have only been in the UK for a few years, but she has already built a vibrant new chapter of her life here. Living with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, she has found joy, community, and purpose through Apna Virsa’s allotment project.
A Weekly Commitment
Since the very first class in June 2024, Swaranjit has attended every single week without fail. Although she doesn’t drive, her dedication shines through—each Friday morning, a fellow group member picks her up so she can join the allotment session. Afterward, she heads straight to her Yoga class, making Fridays a day filled with activity, wellness, and connection.
Finding Joy in Nature
For Swaranjit, gardening has always been a passion. The allotment gives her even more opportunities to grow, experiment, and learn. She loves being outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, drawing inspiration from fellow members and sharing her own experiences.
Friendship and Wellbeing
Beyond the plants and produce, the allotment has brought Swaranjit something even more valuable: friendship. She enjoys the laughter, jokes, and teamwork that come with tending the garden together. The social events have added another layer of joy, helping her feel connected and supported.
This active lifestyle has also had a profound impact on her health. Swaranjit shares that the stress she once carried in her shoulders and knee has disappeared thanks to staying active. The allotment has eased feelings of loneliness and isolation, replacing them with companionship and belonging.
Learning and Sharing
Through the classes, Swaranjit has deepened her knowledge of plants, fruits, and vegetables. These lessons have enriched her own gardening at home and inspired her cooking. She delights in using the fresh, organic produce grown at the allotment to prepare meals for her family.
A Life Enriched
For Swaranjit, the allotment is more than just a garden—it is a place of growth, healing, and community. It keeps her busy, active, and joyful, while giving her the chance to share laughter and friendship with others. Her story is a shining example of how Apna Virsa’s projects nurture not only plants, but also people.
As she beautifully puts it:
“I enjoy the social side, laughing and joking with new friends as we work together on the allotment, and I also enjoy the social events we have had.”
